Derek graduated high school from Bishop James Mahoney High School in Saskatoon. He has a BA in History and English from the University of Saskatchewan and the University of Auckland, which he began while in the Infantry Reserve. Derek went on to do post graduate studies in secondary school teaching and subsequently taught English in New Zealand. Derek moved back to Canada in 2008 to pursue an opportunity with Brian Mallard & Associates.

Derek recently achieved his Certified Financial Planner (CFP) designation from the Financial Planning Standards Council. He enjoys showing his clients a better path to achieving financial security, and helping them traverse the inevitable bumps along the way.

Derek is an avid reader with very eclectic tastes ranging from history to economics to science fiction. Derek likes to stay active, his current obsession is Crossfit. He also travels frequently with his family. His favorite places are Huatulco, Mexico to escape the cold and Whangarei, New Zealand, the hometown of his wife.
